Alarm system house – Find out everything about functions, costs, and possible uses
The number of burglaries in many countries is increasing every year. The regional differences are large. Although there are far fewer burglaries in small communities than in large cities, burglaries are not uncommon there either.
An electronic security system such as an alarm system for a house or apartment has proven reliable protection. A home alarm system not only chases away burglars. It also draws the attention of residents and any connected emergency call centers to the events.
While getting a professional alarm system for your home is a costly investment, the financial and psychological damage of a successful break-in is far more expensive. In the following, you will learn everything about electronic security systems such as your house or apartment alarm systems.
Tasks and functionality of an alarm system for a house or apartment
General information about the house alarm system
A colloquially so-called alarm system describes an electronic security system for securing apartments, houses, and commercial properties. The alarm system is a general term for intruder alarm systems or hazard alarm systems.
A burglar alarm system detects an attempted break-in using motion detectors, door contacts, window contacts, or glass breakage sensors. In such a case, the alarm system initiates the acoustic alarm by indoor and outdoor sirens and the alarm message to the system users and, if necessary, the connected control center.
A burglar alarm system with the addition of, for example, smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms, or high water level alarms is called a hazard alarm system. Thus, the user is not only warned of burglaries but also of fire, water, or gas.
How an alarm system works for a house or apartment
The brain of the alarm system for your home
The control panel of the alarm system forms the brain of your security system, so to speak. The control panel processes incoming signals from the respective components, such as motion detectors or window contacts. Here, the installer defines in the system what the steps and reactions to be initiated should be as soon as a component is triggered. For example, the indoor & outdoor sirens could be activated, or all-electric blinds could be lowered.
The control center is therefore mainly responsible for the interpretation of the incoming signals.
Motion detector – with a camera, passive infrared, microwave technology
The motion detectors installed in the interior only have the task of detecting a movement in the detection area and then forwarding this information to the control center. The motion detector does not evaluate the incoming signal, but the control panel checks whether it is armed or disarmed and reacts accordingly.
The most common motion detectors are passive infrared detectors. PIR detectors record the average room temperature. An object with a temperature different from that prevailing in the room, in combination with a movement, triggers the detector. This can be detrimental if the PIR detector is pointed at a radiator or other heat source. However, high-quality PIR detectors rarely have false alarms even in this case.
Motion detectors with microwave sensors do not work passively compared to PIR detectors. While PIR detectors do not send signals into the room but only receive them, a motion detector with microwave sensors sends microwaves into the detection area and is reflected by objects within the detection area. If the time interval of the reflections back to the detector changes, the motion detector detects a movement and triggers it. So-called dual detectors each have an infrared sensor and a microwave sensor installed and are suitable for garages, for example.
Various manufacturers also offer motion detectors with integrated cameras. It should be noted here that the cameras usually have a very low resolution and are only used to identify dangerous situations and to check whether someone is actually in the room. However, the recorded images cannot be used as evidence in the event of a court proceeding.
Alarm system for your house – possible applications and use
Occupant behavior decisive for the configuration of the alarm system
How your alarm system needs to be configured largely depends on how you, the user, want to use and operate the system. If you only want to activate the alarm system as soon as you are no longer at home, there are several indoor motion detectors available. In addition, door and window contacts are recommended in order to detect the break-in before the burglar enters the property.
However, if you want the alarm system to be activated while you are inside and going to bed, for example, outer skin protection is a good idea. Perimeter protection describes the installation of sensors on all doors and windows in the house. This means that you can move freely in the building even when it is armed. Here, too, it makes sense to install additional motion detectors in the house and activate them as soon as you leave the house. This prevents the burglar from breaking through the roof and being able to move around the house unnoticed.
Operation of the alarm system for house or apartment
While in the past you could only control the alarm system using a control panel mounted on the wall, today you can control your alarm system using an app on your smartphone or tablet. In addition, most alarm systems offer radio remote controls with which the system can be operated within the radio range of the control panel.
